Anna & Saja

Anna and Saja found each other in the kitchen.
In between the hot plates of the bar-like space at their studio, they spend the days cooking for the community around them. This shared kitchen was the place where they learnt that they had common roots despite having grown up in far away places. Coming from the two edges of the Mediterranean, speaking different languages, and yet eating the same things in different forms. In this shared space, it wasn’t hard for them to understand each other even if they didn’t speak the same language.

Our cultures share a deep love of food and an understanding of the dining table as the space where we come together and where care is most often performed. Home is a space
As soon as we spoke to each other of where we come from, we felt that this feeling of home was mutual. Somehow, València and Palestine had a special sisterhood and solidarity between them that we immediately felt, especially when we cooked or ate together. And because of this

By default we use food as a way to connect and show love, because we come from this culture, care
It’s something we were missing in the Netherlands, so we decided to keep it alive amongst ourselves.

We love politics

Saja and Anna share a kitchen. In this shared kitchen, they nurture the community around them. As has been instilled in them through their respective kitchens back home, food is care and food is politics. Picking za’atar is outlawed in Saja’s home in Palestine and the vegetable fields have become an open battlefield with police forces in Anna’s home in València.
