Ka-Ching! with Pedro Matias

Freelancers and artists, more than ever, live in precarious times and need to navigate isolation and anxiety, while finding strategies to being creative. Applications to public art funding can become an important part of our practice as artists, yet too often they feel foreigner to us and our way of thinking. ‘Ka-Ching! is a conversation in a shape of a workshop (online) to demystify these applications and to get intimate with them, to own them and use them to grow.

This session will be practical and interactive, prepared to help your understanding in how to develop your application, a project proposal writing, while offering strategies to apply to your own projects and practice. I will share my experience, my methodologies and knowledge, while showing concrete examples. These examples will come mainly from Dutch art funding, yet can serve as based for any fund application. Previously, I have been funded by AFK and Mondriaan for different projects, both with my collaborative and individual practices.

Besides my past experience as an artist, I had the chance to review many applications from other fellow artists. Since 2014 I facilitate similar workshops at GRA for the students of VAV and linking-bodies’ departments. The workshop will be facilitated online due to the current situation of ‘lockdown’. To be sure we don’t get saturated and alienated by too many hours in front of the screen, I will prepare for us small embodied exercises that everyone can do at home. Besides this, the workshop will be composed of presentation(s) for the all group, as well as smaller breakout rooms which allows more intimate and focused feedback.

This workshop is suitable for individual or collaborative artists, any one running arts projects (curators, programmers, etc.) and interested in applying for public Dutch art funding in the near future. As a queer body, I flourish much faster within supportive, vulnerable and caring systems - within otherness - and this is the space intended to be created for this workshop, even if online. Everyone is very welcome yet I would like to invite specially POC, non-Europeans, disable, queer and non-binary bodies to this workshop.

For that to happen, I would like to ask all the participants to bring the following:

• Short text why do you need the funding
• 3-5 images of your work/project/activities
