Nathanja van Dijk is an art historian with a background in art history and philosophy. As curator, advisor, director (ad interim) and board member she actively propagates her belief that art and culture play an essential role in an open and innovative society. She was the executive director of Kunsthal Rotterdam (2019 - 2021). In 2014 she co-founded A Tale of a Tub in Rotterdam, and served as its director until 2019. Previously she was artistic director of Frankendael Foundation in Amsterdam (2012–2014) and of Concordia 21rozendaal in Enschede (2010–2012). She works as advisor in the field of mission driven (fundraising) strategies and innovation to diverse cultural organizations, governments and funding bodies.

Her curatorial work is centered around questions of how art can contribute to our understanding of present-day social, political, and ecological issues. An example is the travelling film program The Migrant (Moving) Image (2015 – 2019), in response to the migration crisis. The program brought together artists and audiences around the question of representation in this crisis that is at once political, legal, and aesthetic.
