The Power of Words: Educating Ourselves

Many of us did not have the opportunity to learn about the work of liberation, civil liberties and solidarity movements in school. With lacking political and historical education, it is hard to understand some of the technical terms used in protest movements. In this session, we will focus on unpacking some of the key terms in relationship to the Palestinian solidarity movement apartheid, anti-semitism, ethnic cleansing, settler colonialism, orientalism, racism, state of exception. We discuss if and how these terms apply here and in other contexts across the globe in historical and contemporary discourse.

For this session, we will read an academic article together that critically engages with Israel's settler-colonial racial regime in Palestine. Israel is theorized as a textbook example of state of exception, racial state and settler colony, dehumanizing and racializing Palestinian citizens, occupied and besieged subjects. We will also be sharing and updating our frame of reference and pooling knowledge for further reading.
